Pinewood Derby
Origins
Petty Superbird
Cubmaster Don Murphy organized the first Pinewood Derby, held May 15, 1953 in Manhattan Beach, California Pack 280c. Murphy's son was too young to participate in fun runs Soap Box Derby, so he came up with the idea of racing cars in wooden miniature. The cars had the same gravity as a Concept Soap Box Derby full-size cars were built, but much smaller and simpler. After the first race is Don Murphy in 1953, the County of Los Angeles Department of Recreation Pinewood Derby copied with permission from Murphy.
In the 1980s, the design block a cut block, consistent in style with a 1940 front-engine cars, the Indy 500, a solid block changed. The tires also changed from narrow, hard plastic material to form larger "slicks".
Construction
A Cub Scout has a car Pine excellent
The Scout is given a block of pine with two notches for wheels, four plastic wheels and four nails. The car must have completed all nine pieces, with a certain weight (usually five ounces), must not exceed a certain length and must be on track, especially the Scout pack used adjustment.
The blocks can be cut with a knife or a hand saw or band Dremel carving tool for major forms. Decals can scout in stores or craft workshops available for purchase. It is also possible to use the standard model sticker to reproduce real racing cars such as Richard Petty 1970 Plymouth Superbird, shown at right. The original style wheels on cars are based in the open, however, kits mud or body available, or wheels can simply be placed on the outside of the body.
Other is that the old rules of design base, the cub is able to carve and decorate the car as he was. Many scouts also add weight to the final design, to bring the car to the maximum weight authorized, coins, pieces of glue in the lead and molten lead are common ways to add weight. Cars typically vary from blocks of unfinished objects whimsical, with exact replicas of real cars. The fastest cars tend to resemble low doorstops, with weight the rear axle. Graphite in the lubricant is usually only allowed, and it often helps to polish the nails provided.
The idea behind The Pinewood Derby is to paint the parents, usually the father, but sometimes the mother or grandparents to spend time helping the sculpture of children, the design, add weight in agreement, and the last car. However, it is often the case that the parent company will build the car, one aspect of the event, that was ridiculed in the 2005 film Down and Derby, and also in a 2009 episode of South Park, The search for a fast car cottage industry support for delivery of modified wheels, axles and frames as well as videos and instruction books. While a Pinewood Derby kit costs by car $ 4, a number of wheels and axles modified to sell well over ten times. These aftermarket products for the current legal framework under the rules pack some, because the parts are from an official BSA kit. Complete vehicles purchased on eBay and elsewhere are about $ 100 to $ 200. Although these cars are violating the spirit of the event, if the rules can be difficult to enforce.

Contest
The road usually has five lanes 58 and trails on the ground, because the cars are driven by gravity. Tracks can be located in the package or rented. The race will be run in heats, so that any car can run on any track. The drivers can be grouped with others of the same rank (Tiger Cubs, Cubs, Bears, etc.), or can compete with the package as a whole.
The first, second and third place winners usually receive ribbons, medals or trophies. Some packs also award on the basis of car design. First place winner will receive the race in advance the district level, then everyone will be running the district level winners of the race each other to learn the full Council.

As the popularity of the Pinewood Derby has grown, others have embraced the concept. Pinewood Derby is a registered trademark of the BSA, while most use different names. Each has slightly different rules for the manufacture of Derby and race of their cars.
Awana has Awana Grand Prix.
Christian Service Brigade uses the name Shape N Race Derby.
Royal Ambassador Racers RA.
Royal Rangers another kit screw axis and the support axle rod ankle.
Scouts Canada has the KUB Kar rally for Scouts and Beaver Scouts Beaver Buggies.
YMCA cars Chule with the same kit as the Royal Rangers.
Valve cover racing is an event made for some car shows with vehicles coverage valve.

Track Car
Forces drive a car Pinewood Derby gravity and inertia are the opposing forces of friction and air resistance. Because the changes are to maximize the potential energy in car design and the minimization of air resistance and friction when the wheel rotates on the axis occurs objective Axis of the head or body contacts or contacts of the guide rail track. Friction due to air resistance is a small but significant factor. Surface bearing can be cut or twisted and the inner surface of the hub can coned to minimize the contact surface between the hub and the body. Polish the wheel, especially inside the hub with a plastic coating can also be friction. Often, a front wheel lifted slightly so that it is not the track, adding rolling resistance. The axles are filed or made marks burrs and crimp and polished to remove. Other Changes include extensive cut off the head tapered shaft and a notch, the contact area of wheel axle. Minimize Please note that packs rules extra which, if established at all, the changes allowed. In some areas, no change in the axles or wheels are provided.
A second consideration is the rotational energy stored in the wheels. Pinewood Derby car converts gravitational potential energy in translational kinetic energy (speed), plus the rotational energy. Heavier wheels have greater inertia and spinning away energy that could travel at the speed of the vehicle help. A standard wheel has a mass of 3.6 grams, but this can be as little as 1 g reduced by removal of material from the inside of the wheel. Elevation wheel, the rotational energy of a quarter, but the benefit is less with a bumpy road.
A suitable lubricant, usually graphite powder is essential. The wheel alignment is important for both to minimize contact with the head of wheel axle and the body as well as contact between the wheels and guide rail to limit car travel on the track. The focus of a typical car is low, front and rear axle, which helps the car track straight and provide a slight advantage by the additional potential energy.
