Why do they call it “Stock Car” racing?

A rear wheel drive race car with a V-8 based on a front wheel drive car with a V-6? They should go back to the old days of racing when the cars had to be bought from a dealership. Maybe after a few years of watching little four and six bangers limp around the track at 90 miles-per-hour the manufacturers would start getting serious about making real cars again.
