what cars can you modify to reach a good race time?

For instance, someone I know said that you could modify a Lancer evo, and it would run low to mid 12’s?

What other cars could you modify and get that time?

my ex wanted a WRX or an RX-7?

Opinions?

I’m trying to get an idea of a good starter car for drag racing, I want to know what each car can do, and what you think is the best car for running that time, with mods. And I’m thinking doing the Street cars race(not actual street racing). Help?

I agree with nufoundglory about staying away from the fwd cars. You want to start with a rwd or awd car.
Unless you are going to buy a older used car like a 88-92 mustang, camaro, or other like car with the plans of building it up from scratch, there is not a better bang for the buck car out there then the 03/04 cobras. As far as drag racing and straight line speed goes, the cobras are king. Out of all the cars listed on this page, in stock form the 03/04 cobras are faster then any other car on this page in stock form. In fact, the 03/04 cobras are the only car listed anywhere on this page that runs a 12 second 1/4 mile stock. Below I pasted a site you can go to in order to look at all the stock 1/4 mile times for all of the vehicals listed.

You can pick up a 03/04 cobra from anywhere between $18,000-$28,000, depending on year and miles. You can get a 2004 with about 10k miles for $28,000. The cobra comes from the factory with a rating of 390hp and 390tq but any one who has ever been to a track, has any racing experiance at all, or works at a car modification shop will tell you this number is extremely under rated. The cobras put up closer to 430hp and 430tq when they are dynoed. I will paste a site below in case you are new to racing so you can see to hp output.

The biggest advantage the cobras have over the evos and all the other cars on this page is that they have a “built” engine from the factory. What this means is that all the internal parts on the cobras engine are forged. This allows the cobras engine in stock form to handle up to 1000hp. There is no other car you can buy for under 50k that has a “built” engine. With all the other cars listed, you would have to basically replace your engine if you wanted to go over 500-600hp otherwise your engine would be destroyed. I dont know a lot about the tt supras engines, but from what I have been told, they arent completely “built” but they are very strong and can withstand up to 800hp-1000hp without any mods, but if you wanted a tt supra with only 10k miles it would cost you around $50,000+ dollars. Now for the best part of the 03/04 cobras, there ability to be modified. Not even the tuner car fans will argue with the fact that no car can be modified to go faster for cheaper then the 03/04 cobras. For about 2k worth of mods (catback exhuast, SCT tuner, pulleys, CAI) you can add 150hp to your cobra and now you have an 11 second car. Instead of 2k you can spend 5k and trade your stock eaton supercharger for a kenne bell supercharger and now you have a 656rwhp (656rwhp = approx 740hp-780hp) car that is capable of 10 second 1/4 mile runs. Now if you add the 2k worth of mods you are at about 701rwhp (701rwhp = approx 810hp-840hp) which puts your 1/4miles in the 9 second zone. Now if you add cams to this set up you are running 925hp. So basically, you can buy a used 03 cobra with 40k miles for around $21,000 and spend 8k in mods for a total price of $29,000 and have yourself a 925hp 875tq car that is faster then any car on the road. If you just want to run low to mid 12’s you can get there with a stock 03/04 cobra with drag radial tires on the back. Evan Smith for “Fast fords and muscle Mustangs” ran a 12.43 1/4 mile with a completely stock 03 cobra with the only mod being street leagal drag radial tires. If you wanted to, you can spend $500-$1,000 on pulleys and a tune and be in the high 11’s low 12’s. Like I said in the beggining, there is no better bang for your buck then the 03/04 cobras. Everything I have listed is absolute fact, no b.s. and I will list the sites with the references to prove everything I write. Below the first site I will paste is a site that has the times for a couple of 03/04 cobras making high 9 and low 10 second 1/4 mile runs with older kenne bells that dont add near the hp that the newer ones do.
The second site I paste has some 03/04 cobras that are basically stock with just pulleys, exhaust, and a tune running high 11’s and low 12’s, right around where you want to be.

P.S. I spoke of Evan Smith for “Fast Fords and Muscle Mustangs” running a 12.43 in a stock 03 cobra by just putting on street legal drag radial tires and promised that I would back up all my statements with a reference so below I pasted the site you can find this info at. After everything i have writted, if you still have your heart set on getting a tuner car like a evo, sti, rx7 or supra. If you can afford it, get the supra, they are awsome performance vehicals and are the only car that I put on par with the cobras as far as how fast a modified vehical can be. Because they are older (harder to find a good one), and have tubos, they cost a whole lot more then the cobras do to buy and modify though. If you cant afford the supra, then I would say the evo or sti would be my 2nd choice. As nufoundglory said, they are already fast in stock form, and with a few mods can be made into very fast cars. I dont know if you ever have any interest in road courses but if you do, the evos handling is also very good.
